Frequently Asked Questions

A meal plan is a convenient dining package available to all CSUSM students, faculty, and staff for use at campus dining and retail locations. The cost of meal plans is made up of a membership fee and Dining Dollars. Like a gym, the membership fee covers the non-food costs associated with operating your dining spaces. It also provides students with updated facilities, events, access to a dietitian, and the lowest cost for food. Within Kwíila Dining, and everywhere on campus, your Dining Dollars are the amount that can be spent on food purchases.

Resident meal plans are tax-free that's your first benefit. Whether students want to stay and eat with friends or take your food to go in an "Ozzi" container, resident meal plan holders have access to continuous dining in Kwíila from breakfast through dinner or whenever they want to grab a bite. Being on a meal plan also eliminates the need for cooking and cleaning - leaving more time to participate in campus life.

All students living in North Commons or Black Oak Hall are required to purchase a meal plan as part of their housing commitment.

Residents in the North Commons and Black Oak Hall will automatically be assigned the B Plan. If you wish to choose a different plan, you can change your meal plan up to Census Date (typically three weeks from the start of the classes) through the CSUSM app under Dining or CSUSM Dining website. All charges will be added to your MYCSUSM portal within 1-2 business days.

We recommend the A Plan which has the highest amount of Dining Dollars and ensures the best value for your money. Whether you are a three meal-a-day person or a snacker throughout the day, we have a plan that best fits your needs. Resident students can choose between Plan A, Plan B, or Plan C or Cal Fresh (if eligible).

If you are not required to purchase a meal plan as a resident of Black Oak Hall or North Commons, meal plans can also be purchased through the CSUSM app under Dining or CSUSM Dining Website. All charges will be added to your MYCSUSM portal within 1-2 business days. Once a meal plan is chosen, it becomes available for use immediately! To purchase a meal plan click here. If you have more questions regarding meal plans call (760)750-4700 or email dining@csusm.edu.

Absolutely. All meal plan options are available to commuter students, in addition to a commuter-specific plan. Plans can be purchased through the CSUSM app under Dining or CSUSM Dining Website. All charges will be added to your MYCSUSM portal within 1-2 business days. Once a meal plan is chosen, it becomes available for use immediately!

We have provided our diners with a secure Dynamic QR Code to use like a debit card for food purchases at all CSUSM Dining Services locations. Your Dynamic QR Code is located on the CSUSM app under Dining icon.

Your meal plan is accepted at all dining locations throughout campus. For the best value, use your Dining Dollars in Kwíila Dining for best value. Dining Dollars can also be used at campus retail locations at retail prices.

Our dining locations accept the following: credit cards, debit cards, cash, Dining Dollars, and Cougar Cash.

Dining Dollars can be added to meal plans by you via CSUSM app or CSUSM Dining website at any time. All charges will be added to your MYCSUSM portal within 1-2 business days. The additional Dining Dollars will be available for use immediately.

Students have complete agency over their Dining Dollars. Eating at Kwíila Dining instead of retail locations provides the most value for your plan, and your balance will be displayed on your receipt after each purchase (like and ATM receipt) and in the CSUSM app. You can also use the meal plan budget chart available on the CSUSM Dining website as a guide to help you stay on track.

Healthy options are available daily across various Kwíila Dining stations. Nutrition information can be viewed in real time through the CSUSM Sodexo My Way website as well as through the Everyday App. Meal plan holders also have access to you dietitian, Hallie Berger, who can help students navigate healthy eating choices.

Please contact Dining Services at dining@csusm.edu to ensure the Dining Services team can assist you in finding healthy and safe food for every dietary restriction.

As long as you purchase a meal plan for the upcoming semester, Dining Dollars always roll over from semester to semester. Unused Dining Dollars at the end of the fall semester will roll over to the spring semester.

Dining Dollars also roll from one academic year to the next with the purchase of an annual meal plan by May 31.

You can email Dining Services at dining@csusm.edu or call CSUSM Dining at (760) 750-4700 with any questions or feedback throughout the semester.

We offer ways to get involved all semester long! Outside of our events, students are encouraged to get involved in our Student Culinary Council, a group dedicated to shaping our dining program through collaboration between students and managers.

We also offer dining internships that allow us to directly work with students to provide hands-on experience while learning more about perceptions of Dining Services on the CSUSM campus. Be on the lookout for our semi-annual survey to tell us about your experience right from your phone!
